There are thousands of children who apply for scholarships and selective schools each year. However, do all of them get admissions and scholarships? No! Then, what makes these children who get scholarships and get selected in the entrance exams different? The answer is that they are better than the average, especially in writing proficiency. If you want to excel in writing, you’ll have to stand out. Is that achievable? Yes it is. One might be well-equipped with English language but is everyone aware of the art of expression? Writing is about the expression of emotions, depictions of scenes, and not just plain blatant words. This article will step by step guide you to write better so that you can create an impact on the reader.
When you write willfully, include the following points in your writing and witness the change:
We are all human beings granted with five senses of touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell. So if you are not using them all in your writing, then it might just be garbage. When you write something, you should always feel it. See how your body reacts to it and describe THAT reaction.
Consider this:
“Mr. Smith won the lottery. He was so happy.”
“Mr. Smith could not control his drools when he heard that he has won the lottery.”
Did you notice anything different? Not just the sentence has gotten long but is also better at expressing the reaction of Mr. Smith. He was drooling over money as we drool over food. He couldn’t wait to have it all.
This is a stereotype but what do Indians add to their food that it tastes so good? Spices! Add spice to your language. Your paragraph should be enriched with high vocabulary and a variety of sentences. Use idioms, use slang, use double quotes, semicolon, colon, who is stopping you? Express as if you were in the situation and it’s your story.
Consider this sentence:
“When I saw the dog, I panicked. He had big teeth and he looked hungry.”
Now, the same idea is expressed in a different manner.
“His huge, sharp teeth appeared like tusks and had a famished look on his face. I was mortified by that evil snarl right in front of my face.”
The second sentence depicts the fear of the person, the look that the dog gave him, and the ongoing chronicles between them.
Simile, Metaphor, Personification, and Symbolism are a few common literary devices that a writer must be consciously putting in his writing. Literary devices can significantly enhance your writing. Words are not only smoothed for the reader but an image is built up about the things you write. It boosts their interest and they understand what you write by empathizing with you.
Use of symbolism:
“Ramesh and Jessica were having a rather uncommon wedding, a union of Christians and Hindus. So they freed the white doves at their wedding reception to restore the hindered peace between the communities.”
White is the color of peace and freeing doves mean freedom from conservative thinking. The same sentence could be written as “Oh! Ramesh and Jessica had an inter-religion wedding”. Which one is better?
Think about it: Your everyday life is a question of morals. Every time you go and buy fish from the market, you kill one life to feed the other. Isn’t that a difficult decision? Put that in your writing. It will express the cumbersome process of thinking logically and emotionally.
“Chris knew that Robert had stolen the million dollar necklace from their house. At that moment, he remembered a long-forgotten memory of the good old days. Robert used to laugh and play with him at his house. His honesty was dying from the sweet poison given by his friendship. He pulled the string and decided to shut his mouth until the day he dies: friendship lives.”
In the end, it’s a good mixture of your creative thinking and drops of empathy. That’s how you will refine your words and modify them into something more than meaningful. Practice writing, always look for new words, and try to bring them into daily conversation. Language is not only limited to words, it is a way to express better.
